Cluj-Napoca, a little known gem of Romania

We chose Cluj-Napoca for our last overnight in Romania as it has a good train connections to Budapest and Vienna. There is a delightful sleeper train in which dogs can travel in the sleeping car if you book a whole compartment. See below.

Cluj turns out to be a lovely gently European city full of nice people, dog-friendly parks and pretty buildings. Some fab vegan food too (found via the Happy Cow app).

Happy Railway Dog in Cluj-Napoca in the above stunning 3 bed apartment we had for about 45€
Not the best photo of some of the beautiful architecture
Amazing plant-based raw cakes
I like the horses best, who cares who’s sitting on them?
Children playing round the giants’ legs, unaware of them
Make films not war. Local cinema poster
Pet-friendly Bunt veggie restaurant where the rosti is out of this world
2 person compartment with plenty of head room

The train journey from Cluj to Budapest was so comfy. We booked the places a week before at a Romanian main railway station. The clerk spoke good English and coped well with one 2nd class Interrail ticket, another adult needing a ticket, a dog and reservations for a 2 bed compartment.

And an en suite toilet sink and shower – not had this on a train before!
Railway dog has plenty of space on the floor. We put his Nestbedz down.

A chilly soggy arrival at Budapest Kelati
