Marksburg castle, Rhine Valley

Dog and I took the train to Braubach again, this time to go up one hill to look at the Marksburg from afar, then up another hill to explore this ancient fortress.

16th century canon inside the castle
Wine store with bellows pumps to move wine between barrels. Wine was drunk instead of water for safety, but was 4% proof.
Medieval kitchen, grinding your own grains.
Note there’s a bar and cafe with a beautiful terrace at the entrance of the castle which has good vegan options and soya milk. No need to go back to medieval times for your lunch!
Step stairway
Fridge fuelled by refreshing with ice from the winter Rhine, stored in the basement. Not such a reliable option these days.
Armour display. Someone in the 19th century filled the castle with historic items and reconstructions, some of which are questionable. This sows doubt on anything seen here, even the internal structures. Nevertheless the Marksburg is the only castle on the Rhine that didn’t need rebuilding due to attack.
The blacksmiths just inside the castle entrance, for your regular iron working needs.
