Drizzly cycle on Good Friday

Bad Ems is pretty Ems

The forecast wasn’t good, but what was I supposed to do with an Interrail ticket, a bicycle that came inexpensively with the Airbnb and a dog? We are staying in Niederlahnstein, which has taken a while to learn to spell. It’s the Caversham of Koblenz, ie the pleasant suburb on the other side of the river to the main town. It’s also well placed for taking local trains along rivers.

Baspie dog appears a little concerned about going out in the rain with a bicycle on a train

Baspie runs alongside the bike with my patented bungee and lead triangle. On proper roads with no cycle paths, he goes in the rucksack or we walk. Works out quite well and he’s happy for a chance to run. He’s well used to it.

Medieval river wall on the Lahn at Dausenau

I liked the look of Dausenau on the map (Komoot). Apart from the steep stairs at the station to carry your bike up, it was a good choice. The river photo was taken in the shelter of a road bridge over the river where three young boys were playing. I asked them the merits of the paths on each side of the river and we had a good chat thanks to their school English and Google translate. They seemed chuffed to help.

Bridge at Bad Ems

When we reached the civilised pedestrian bridge at Bad Ems the drizzle was very light, so we had a picnic on the benches in the middle of it. Nice views of this historic spa town, and a spot of people watching to do, seeing how they interact with the weather. A local Canadian guy with his Argentinian partner kindly took these photos of us.

By the end of the day back at base after cycling on downstream back to the Rhine, we were soggy, chilly, tired and hungry. So one of us dived under the duvet and the other made dinner and hung out stuff to dry.

A very hungry dog loving his dinner.
Raspberry and ginger oat cookie balls, to celebrate having a combi oven in the room.
